Three day short course for technical and operational staff in coal mines presented by:

This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of the mechanics of soils and rocks as they relate to the management of coal mining operations. It is aimed at technical and operational staff who
are responsible for the safe conduct of coal mining operations.

It will facilitate improved understanding and interpretation of common geotechnical phenomena encountered in mining, underpin more informed decisions and promote more effective dialogue between geotechnical professionals and technical staff.

Topics covered:
• Basic mechanics of geomaterials (Introductory Module – OPTIONAL)
• Fundamental behaviour of soils and rocks
• Strength of fine grained and coarse grained soils
• Properties of rocks, joints and rock masses
• Stability of low walls, spoil and waste dumps
• Stability of highwalls
• Rockfall behaviour, monitoring, modelling and assessment

The 3 day course will be broken up into sessions comprising:
• Explanation of theoretical basics of geomechanics
• Laboratory demonstrations of physical behaviour and testing methods
• Applications and case studies in mining
Attendees will be issued with a certificate upon completion of the course.

3 day course – 17-19th June 2026 – $4500 incl GST
